Position Summary
The mission of the Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) is to enhance the public's health by training future leaders and health professionals from diverse backgrounds, conducting innovative research, translating research into policy and practice, and serving our local communities and those of the nation and the world. The Development and Alumni Affairs staff are focused on building and sustaining a growing portfolio of individual gift prospects and donors to support key priorities of the Fielding School of Public Health, including endowed faculty chairs, student support, faculty research, addressing the most urgent needs of the school, capital improvements, and other priorities identified by the Dean of the school.

Primary Responsibilities
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Affairs, the Senior Director of Development will be responsible for qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting major individual prospects $100,000 and up. This individual will work collaboratively with the dean, gift officers, faculty and key administrators, and members of the school’s board of advisors to increase the number and size of gifts from individuals and family foundations; coordinate and staff donor visits, working with Health Sciences Development, Central Development and within the school; and host VIP visitors to the UCLA Fielding School. This individual will also lead a sophisticated and creative stewardship program that inspires donors to consistent and greater giving and acknowledges the non-monetary contributions and success of Fielding School alumni and friends.

The Senior Director will lead and manage annual fund and alumni relations staff focused on annual level individual gifts up to $100,000, alumni giving campaigns and engagement, and stewardship implementation. In addition, this individual will oversee efforts in coordination with the school’s milestone events, and other fundraising initiatives vital to achieving the primary goals and objectives of the development team, and the broader mission of FSPH’s External Affairs Office.

Qualifications
1. A minimum of five to seven years of progressively responsible development experience with an emphasis on major giving fundraising, preferably in public health, and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as sales, marketing or business development.

2. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising in a university setting with a strong understanding of the goals, functions and services of a research university or institution of equivalent complexity.

3. Proven skills in developing sophisticated strategies in planning, implementing and administering complex major gift solicitations or other solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity. 4. Strong experience in making cold calls and resilience in dealing with initial resistance and rejection.

5. Strong documented record of gifts solicited and closed in the major gifts range and/or solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity.

6. Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with senior academic leadership, high-level staff across campus and other development staff toward the accomplishment of fundraising goals.

7. Strong ability to recruit, orient, train, organize, motivate and evaluate staff and volunteers who support development goals and programs.

8. Ability to establish priorities, manage multiple tasks and multi-phase projects simultaneously from inception to completion and complete work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.

9. Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, about UCLA’s fundraising goals and the specific priorities of the UCLA Fielding School; equal ability to listen perceptively and convey sensitivity and awareness.

10. Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to produce business correspondence, solicitation materials, appropriate letters of acknowledgement, proposals to individuals, corporations and foundations, and reports.

11. Impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues as well as confidential information.

12. Experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing special events. 13. Knowledge of Microsoft Suite of applications is required as is familiarity with other applications, programs and databases as needed with a willingness to learn new technologies.

14. Ability to travel and work some weekends and/or evenings as needed.

15. Familiarity with current issues of public health is preferred.

16. Advanced degree is preferred.
